Understand how your body changes with age.
Learn why strength matters.
Discover how to train for the long term.
Strong for Life: The Science of Ageing is a 3-hour educational and practical seminar designed to help you understand what actually happens to the body as we age, why strength training becomes increasingly important, and how you can train effectively to stay strong, capable and independent for life.
Led by Chris Seville and Mark Derrick, the seminar combines evidence-based education with practical training so you leave with a better understanding of ageing, and, more importantly, what you can actually do about it.
This isn't about stopping the ageing process.
It's about making sure you are as strong, capable and resilient as possible while you go through it.
What you’ll learn
Part 1: What Happens as You Age
The bad news. The good news.
Ageing brings a number of predictable changes to the body. Understanding them is the first step towards doing something about them.
We'll explore:
What actually happens to your body as you age
Changes in muscle mass and strength
Bone health and why it matters
Changes in balance, mobility and physical capacity
Why maintaining strength becomes increasingly important
The relationship between strength, independence and quality of life
What you can influence — and what you can't
Then we'll turn to the good news.
We'll look at why strength training is one of the most effective tools we have for maintaining physical capability as we age, and why it's never too late to start.
Part 2: How you train
Knowing that you should get stronger is one thing.
Knowing how to train effectively is another.
This session focuses on the practical side of strength training and how your approach should evolve as you get older.
We'll cover:
How to approach strength training as you age
What makes an effective training program
How much you need to train
Exercise selection and why there isn't one exercise that suits everyone
Managing training intensity and volume
Recovery and adapting your training
How to progress safely and effectively
Common misconceptions about training as you get older
The goal isn't simply to give you a list of exercises.
It's to help you understand how to train intelligently for the long term.
Part 3: Deadlift Practical
Time to put the theory into practice.
The deadlift is one of the most useful movements for developing whole-body strength, but learning to perform it well is about much more than simply picking a weight up from the floor.
In this practical session, we'll work through:
Setting up for the deadlift
Understanding the movement
Bracing and protecting yourself
Positioning and technique
Common mistakes and how to correct them
How to select an appropriate starting weight
How to progress the movement over time
You'll have the opportunity to put what you've learned into practice and receive guidance throughout the session.
You don't need to be an experienced lifter to participate.
